Reneé Rapp Credits Mom for Pop Star name, Discusses Coming Out
Reneé Rapp, the singer and actress, believes her mother, Denise Rapp, strategically chose her name to pave the way for her success as a pop star. Rapp shared this anecdote on Amy Poehler‘s podcast,Good Hang.
According to Rapp, her mother intentionally selected a first and last name with alliteration. “She was like,’Alliteration,just in case she wants to be a pop star,'” Rapp told Poehler,adding that she finds the decision “conceited” but appreciates her mother’s foresight.
During the interview,Rapp also discussed her evolution as a singer and her experience coming out as a lesbian on Saturday Night Live.She recalled a sketch where writers initially referred to her as a “little bisexual intern.”
Rapp, who was publicly bisexual at the time, had been privately discussing her feelings with her girlfriend and friends, realizing she identified more as a lesbian.She requested the writers change the sketch accordingly.
“labeling yourself publicly is really, really, really empowering,” Rapp said, while acknowledging it can also be intimidating. She described coming out on SNL as “pretty cunty” but ultimately liberating.
Earlier in the week, Reneé Rapp debuted her new single, “Leave Me Alone,” at the American music awards. The song is the first release as a lead artist as the deluxe edition of her debut album Snow Angel in 2023. It offers a preview of her upcoming second LP, Bite Me, slated for release Aug. 1.
In “Leave Me Alone,” Rapp alludes to her departure from the HBO Max series Sex Lives of College girls and feeling pressured by her label for new music. She sings, “Signed a hundred NDAs but I still say something/Leave me alone, bitch, I wanna have fun/Took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t fuckin’.”
Rapp left Sex Lives after two seasons to concentrate on her music career.Since then, she has headlined tours, performed at festivals, and taken on a lead role in the film adaptation of Mean Girls: the Musical.
