The chairman of the House Oversight Committee said on Wednesday that some Republican members support the idea of a presidential pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for her cooperation with the committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) told Politico that “a lot of people” back the idea of Maxwell receiving a pardon from President Trump if she assists the committee’s probe, although he personally opposes such a move.
Comer described Maxwell as “the worst person in this whole investigation” other than Epstein himself, but acknowledged that his committee is divided on the issue.
The ranking Democrat on the committee, Rep. Robert Garcia of Long Beach, condemned the idea, stating that Democrats on the panel uniformly oppose any pardon for Maxwell.
Garcia called the prospect “outrageous,” emphasizing that Maxwell is a sexual abuser who facilitated the rape of women and children.
The committee has been investigating Epstein’s network and has said Maxwell would testify to Congress if granted clemency.
Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence in a federal prison in Texas for sex trafficking crimes connected to Jeffrey Epstein.
