Rescue of Over 100 Rohingya Refugees in Indonesia Sparks Urgent Humanitarian Debate
More than 100 Rohingya refugees were rescued after their boat sank near Indonesia. The United Nations refugee agency reported that 116 refugees, including women and children, were found on the beach in East Aceh.
The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic group facing severe persecution in Myanmar. Many escape their situation by risking dangerous sea journeys to reach countries like Malaysia or Indonesia.
Faisal Rahman from UNHCR confirmed the report, stating that the refugees are currently on the beach, waiting for decisions on their next steps. A local fisherman, Saifudin Taher, spotted the boat before it sank, only 100 meters from the shore. All passengers survived, but one needed medical attention.
Rohingya migration to Indonesia varies throughout the year. Arrivals typically decline during storms but increase in calmer sea conditions. Last month, 152 refugees were stuck at sea for days before being allowed to land.
Indonesia is not a signatory to the UN refugee convention. It calls for neighboring countries to share the responsibility for Rohingya refugees. While many people in Aceh understand the plight of the Rohingya, some locals express frustration. They argue that the Rohingya use limited resources and sometimes cause conflicts.
In December 2023, tensions escalated when students forced the relocation of over 100 Rohingya refugees from a shelter in Aceh. The students vandalized their belongings during the incident.
