Dr. Lauren Heath, a doctoral researcher at The George Institute for Global Health, has been awarded a $163,400 Postgraduate Scholarship from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The funding is designated for research into the role of the hormone aldosterone and its contribution to hypertension and kidney disease in Australia.

The scholarship is part of the NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships 2025 scheme, which is supported by a $10.1 million investment from the Australian Government. Dr. Heath is one of 67 graduates selected to receive funding under this initiative to support the next generation of medical and health researchers.

The Role of Aldosterone in Hypertension

Aldosterone is a hormone that plays a central role in the development of hypertension. Because of its influence on blood pressure regulation, a new generation of medications that target the aldosterone pathway is currently under investigation.

The Role of Aldosterone in Hypertension

While these aldosterone-blocking therapies show promise in treating high blood pressure, their clinical application is often limited. A significant risk associated with these treatments is the potential development of dangerously high potassium levels in the blood.

Research Objectives and Clinical Impact

Dr. Heath’s PhD research aims to address an under-recognised area of unmet clinical need by examining the prevalence of elevated aldosterone levels among Australians living with hypertension. The study will specifically assess how novel aldosterone-targeted therapies affect serum potassium levels.

A primary focus of the research will be patients living with chronic kidney disease, as these individuals may be more susceptible to the potassium-related complications associated with aldosterone-blocking medications. By investigating this link, the research seeks to improve the management of aldosterone excess and hypertension.

High blood pressure and kidney disease are incredibly common but we still have significant gaps in understanding how aldosterone contributes to both conditions in Australian patients. This scholarship gives me the opportunity to investigate that link and help determine how we can use emerging therapies more safely and effectively.

The findings from this research are expected to have direct implications for the treatment of hypertension and chronic kidney disease, potentially allowing doctors to utilize emerging therapies with greater safety and efficacy for Australian patients.
