“Resistance Box,” a new documentary, explores the unfulfilled cinematic dreams of Andalusian filmmaker Fernando Ruiz Vergara (1942-2011).

According to the film’s directors, Vergara’s “Rocío,” a documentary about a popular pilgrimage, exposed the relationships between religious, political, and economic powers in Andalusia.
The directors stated that the original version of “Rocío” remains prohibited in Spain.

Resistance Box states that some absent images can talk about our world with more eloquence than those present. Back to them without nostalgia, with well open eyes, becomes an exercise of discovery.
This documentary essay assumes resistance, the lucid word, film matter, the technological eagerness and ethics of Ruiz Vergara’s work as a lighthouse for a new film form that is a faithful time to its origin as deliberately free, reflective and equally combative with respect to the images and speeches of the present.
An Iberian Collaboration
filmed entirely in Portugal and Spain, “Resistance Box” is a co-production between Azhar Media and Alvaquero (Spain) and Blablabla Media (Portugal), with financial support from the ICAA – Ministry of Spanish Culture and the participation of Canal Sur.
According to a producer, Vergara was a self-taught filmmaker who was strongly connected to Portugal.
Another producer added that the film aims to restore past justice through cinema.
“Resistance Box” is expected to be released in Spain in September 2025.
