In the conventional criminal justice system, the focus often lies on the perpetrator, with victims sometimes feeling like mere bystanders in their own stories.However, a growing movement known as restorative justice is shifting the paradigm, placing the victim at the center of the healing process.
Restorative justice, as described by Professor Emeritus Marie Keenan of UCD, offers “a way of giving justice to victims that centers the victim of crime in the process.” This approach can involve facilitated meetings between victims and offenders in a safe, supervised environment, allowing victims to express the impact of the crime and seek answers.
