Resveratrol: Compound May Play a Role in Boosting Female Fertility

A new review suggests that resveratrol, a natural compound present in the skin of grapes, blueberries, and raspberries, shows promise in improving female fertility. The systematic review, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, examined the potential of resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound known for its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, England, along with international colleagues, analyzed 24 in vitro and in vivo studies involving 9,563 participants. Their findings indicate that resveratrol could improve both the quantity and quality of egg cells, known as oocytes.
Specifically, two out of four studies focusing on the quantity of matured oocytes reported an increase with resveratrol. Furthermore, two studies assessing the quality of these oocytes both showed improvements among women who took resveratrol.Scientists believe resveratrol reduces oxidative stress, protecting mitochondrial DNA and enhancing telomerase activity, which may slow cellular aging and extend ovarian lifespan. Resveratrol also activates sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a molecule typically reduced in aged oocytes.
The review also suggests that resveratrol could potentially treat infertility related to endometriosis and positively affect polycystic ovary syndrome and obesity-related infertility by inhibiting androgen production and reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. The compound’s potential role in female fertility is an area of growing interest.
However, the review showed mixed results concerning miscarriage and pregnancy data. while two of five studies reported increased pregnancy rates,one study noted a decrease and also reported an increase in miscarriage rates. Another study found no difference in miscarriage rates.
Resveratrol is generally considered safe in moderate amounts from diet and supplements, up to five grams daily for a month. The safety of high-dose supplementation over extended periods remains unclear.
Lee Smith, professor of public health at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and senior author, said their review highlights resveratrol’s potential to improve reproductive outcomes and pave the way for new, less invasive treatments using natural substances.
”Our systematic review on resveratrol and female fertility is a extensive overview of all current research, and it highlights the compound’s potential to improve reproductive outcomes and possibly pave the way for new, less invasive treatments, using natural substances,” Smith said.
Smith cautioned that the findings are based on limited human studies with varying parameters and a lack of robust data on dosage and side effects, particularly concerning birth defects or fetal abnormalities.
”Therefore, there is a need for further clinical trials, involving human participants, in order to translate these promising results into practical recommendations for women looking to improve their fertility, including guidance on the safe and effective dosage of resveratrol,” Smith added.
