The Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies (APED) has issued a statement expressing confidence that its member stores will operate normally during the planned general strike on December 11th,2023. The association emphasized its commitment to dialog and the recent improvements in working conditions for retail employees.
APED’s Position on the Strike and Worker Rights
Responding to questions from journalist JE regarding contingency plans for the strike, APED affirmed its respect for the right to strike as a legitimate tool for labor demands. Though, the association stated it “privileges negotiation and dialogue over any forms of contestation.” APED also asserted that working conditions for employees in the retail and distribution sector have been improved and strengthened.
APED highlighted the recent updates to the collective employment contract, describing them as a “fair and balanced approach, fundamental for social peace and valorization of the sector.” The association is currently engaged in negotiations with various unions to establish a new “balanced and robust” collective employment contract.
Limited Impact from Previous Sectoral strikes
APED pointed to the lack of support for previous sectoral strikes within the retail and distribution sector as evidence that operations have not been substantially disrupted. According to the association, these strikes did not lead to “important disruptions or setbacks in the normal functioning of operations in our Associates’ stores.”
Based on this history, APED “does not anticipate that there will be a different scenario” during the general strike. Though, the association acknowledged that the strike may impact other sectors, particularly transport, potentially creating difficulties for the general population.
Assurances to Consumers
APED’s primary message is one of reassurance to consumers. The association aims to convey “confidence and peace of mind” regarding the continued normal operation of its member stores on december 11th. APED pledged to make every effort to minimize any potential impacts resulting from the strike.
