Prevalence of Abuse

A recent ‍survey⁤ of⁢ over ‍1,200‍ members of the Mandate trade union, representing workers in⁤ the Irish bar and retail sectors, reveals ‍a concerning level of workplace abuse. Nearly two-thirds of respondents reported experiencing⁣ verbal abuse while performing their duties.

The survey⁤ also ⁤highlighted the threat of ‍physical harm,‌ with over 25% of workers reporting ‍threats to their safety. ⁣ More than 11%⁣ indicated they had been physically assaulted‍ during their employment, demonstrating a⁤ tangible ⁣risk to their well-being.

Comparison⁢ to Scotland and Calls ⁤for Legislation

Mandate officials note a ⁢striking⁤ similarity between the experiences of Irish retail‌ and bar staff and those of their counterparts ⁢in ⁤Scotland. However, the Scottish government has ‌taken⁣ proactive steps ‍to‍ address the issue through ⁣stronger legal protections.

in⁣ 2021, Scotland⁣ enacted legislation recognizing the need for additional safeguards for⁣ frontline workers facing abuse. According ⁤to management details from Police Scotland, prosecutions for threatening and abusive behavior have increased by 37% since⁤ the law’s implementation, and‍ prosecutions for common assault ⁤have ⁣risen by 36%.

These figures, as reported by Mandate, ‍suggest that specific legal protections can lead to improved criminal justice outcomes for⁢ workers.

Advocacy and Next Steps

Mandate plans to present the survey findings to Alan ⁣Dillon, the Minister‌ of ⁤State with obligation for retail. The union ⁢is also advocating for the government’s support of the Protection of Retail Workers’⁤ Bill, introduced by Fianna Fáil Senator Mary Fitzpatrick.

This proposed legislation seeks to amend the Criminal Justice Act, creating distinct offenses related⁣ to the assault, threat, harassment, or abuse of retail workers while ⁣they are on the⁢ job. ‌The⁤ aim‍ is to provide a clearer legal framework for prosecuting perpetrators and deterring future incidents.
