Marlen Reusser seals Tour de Suisse victory; Vollering hampered by illness
Updated June 16, 2025
KÜSSNACHT, Switzerland—marlen Reusser of Team Movistar capped off a stellar performance at the Tour de Suisse, winning the final stage and solidifying her overall lead. Her victory came after a challenging 2024 season marked by illness and injury.
Reusser initially seized the yellow jersey on thursday, outmaneuvering Demi Vollering of FDJ Suez in a sprint. She maintained her lead through the subsequent stages, entering Sunday’s final leg with a narrow three-second advantage over Vollering and a 1:23 lead on Kasia Niewiadoma of Canyon-SRAM.
Despite Vollering gaining a second in an intermediate sprint, Reusser launched a solo attack with 9.4 kilometers remaining, crossing the finish line 28 seconds ahead of Niewiadoma and a visibly exhausted Vollering.
“It is indeed great.I am really, really happy,” reusser said, expressing her elation at the finish.

Vollering, the defending champion, admitted to feeling unwell during the race. “I feel empty,” she said. “Time to sleep.” She acknowledged Reusser’s strength, stating, “Marlen was really strong today. Since the beginning, I didn’t feel good. I just tried to give every day my best. I am really thankful for my team.”
Vollering speculated that a virus might be affecting her performance, noting that her teammate Elise Chabbey also struggled. She expressed her need for rest after a demanding series of races, including victories at Vuelta, Itzulia, and Catalanya.
Reusser’s triumph marks a significant comeback after a difficult period. In 2024,she battled COVID-19 and suffered severe injuries in a crash at the Tour of Flanders, including a fractured jaw, broken teeth, and damaged ear canals. Although she returned to racing quickly, lingering effects of long COVID forced her to halt her season in June. Reusser consulted specialists and used methods such as hypnosis to aid her recovery.
When asked about her past ordeal, Reusser said, “This question I get asked so many times in the last weeks. I am little bit sick with this question.I am just back in life and super happy. On a day like today I don’t think about last year. I just enjoy this day.”
