Rev Up for a Safer Ride: L’ONASER Takes the Helm at Tour du Faso 2024 with Life-Saving Helmet Initiative
Road Safety Awareness Campaigns in Burkina Faso
The National Road Safety Office (ONASER) has launched a caravan that travels through all the towns in Burkina Faso to convey awareness messages and promote road safety. This initiative aims to make the roads safer for everyone by encouraging users to wear a helmet.
The Ministry of Transport, Urban Mobility and Road Safety has started this operation to mobilize stakeholders in the road sector and all citizens in favor of road citizenship. According to Ms. SAME/YAMEOGO BOUDNOMA NINA, Director of Road Safety Planning and Promotion, head injuries are the leading cause of death among motorcyclists, and safe and quality helmets reduce the risk of death by more than six times and brain damage up to 74%.
The campaign aims to raise awareness among road users (motorists, users of 2 or 3-wheel motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians) to promote civic-mindedness and change behavior on the roads. This includes respecting the rules of the highway, wearing a seatbelt, wearing a helmet, possessing documents relating to vehicles, and maintaining those vehicles. The campaign also emphasizes the prohibition of driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
Ms. SAME/YAMEOGO BOUDNOMA NINA emphasized the importance of committing together to fight road rudeness, as road safety is everyone’s business. She recommended safe, cooperative, civic, and responsible behavior. Notably, wearing a helmet will be mandatory from January 1, 2024, in Burkina Faso.
