walking into The Bushnell for “MJ: the Michael Jackson Musical,” I was a bundle of contradictions. I’ve always loved Jackson’s music and undeniable artistry, but his offstage life left me with a sense of unease.
from the moment the curtain rose, Christopher Wheeldon’s incendiary staging captivated me. The energy was electric, fueled by over 25 of Jackson’s greatest hits, including “Beat It,” “I’ll be There,” “don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Billie Jean,” and of course, the iconic “Thriller.”
The production is a visual feast.Derek McLane’s sets, Paul tazewell’s costumes, Natasha Katz’s lighting, and Peter Nigrini’s projections combine to create a Broadway experience that is truly spectacular. Lynn Nottage’s book is equally impressive, skillfully weaving a narrative around Jackson’s rise to international stardom with the release of “Thriller.”
However, while the show is undeniably entertaining, it ultimately feels like an overblown tribute concert. Those seeking a deeper exploration of jackson’s creative process or personal struggles may find themselves wanting. The show peaks early,leaving little room for further growth and leaving me,personally,feeling somewhat underwhelmed.
