Revitalizing Africa Hall: A Landmark Renovation by Architectus Conrad Gargett
Africa Hall Cultural Center Renovation by Architectus Conrad Gargett
Architectus Conrad Gargett has completed a significant renovation of Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project revitalizes a historic building originally established in 1961 as a conference venue for African nations and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). This modernist structure, designed by Arturo Mezzèdimi, has been restored to serve as a vital cultural and conference center.
Historical Significance
The Africa Hall has played an important role in Africa’s history. It hosted the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later transformed into the African Union (AU). The renovation was initiated by the ECA in collaboration with UNESCO, the African Union, and the Ethiopian Government.
Renovation Details
The renovation process emphasized historical preservation. A Conservation Management Strategy guided the work to maintain the building’s historical and cultural integrity. Key features, such as the reinforced concrete structure, original mosaic tiles, and stained-glass artwork by Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle, were meticulously restored.
Thirteen million new tiles were produced to match the originals, and Tekle’s stained glass artwork was refurbished by his grandson. More than 500 pieces of custom-designed furniture by Mezzèdimi were also restored.
Modern Features
The redesigned Africa Hall includes modern facilities to enhance its function as a top conferencing space. The Assembly Hall was reconfigured to accommodate 55 member states, equipped with advanced audio-visual technology and a large LED display.
New rooftop service areas and an external lift core mirror the design language of the original building with contemporary materials, such as zinc shingles.
Visitor Experience
A new museum and exhibition space added to Africa Hall showcases its historical significance. Enhanced visitor facilities include a café, visitor center, bus drop-off, and parking areas, ensuring a welcoming environment for guests.
This renovation ensures Africa Hall continues to be a symbol of African unity and progress for future generations.
