The upcycling project for the world’s largest and longest KTX Osong Station loading space will finally break ground on the 4th of next month.

Kim Young-hwan, Governor of North Chungcheong Province, is accelerating the project by visiting the UK in person to conduct benchmarking.

Chungcheongbuk-do announced on the 28th that it plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a complex cultural facility using the loading space at KTX Osong Station B parking lot on the 4th of next month.

The plan is to spend a total of 3.7 billion won and 10 million won to build a two-story, 765.3㎡ complex cultural space with a total floor area of 765.3 m2, with the goal of completion on December 24th, equipped with functions for public relations, exhibitions, and conferences.

The upcycling project for the world’s largest and longest KTX Osong Station loading area, with a maximum height of 18m, a width of 300m, and a length of 5km, has begun.

Once the project is completed by the end of the year, North Chungcheong Province plans to immediately begin planning the second phase of the project for additional development of the 2km section of loading space.

To this end, North Chungcheong Governor Kim Young-hwan met with Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon on the 16th and requested support.

In particular, Governor Kim visited the London Bridge area in London, England the day before local time and benchmarked ways to utilize shipping space.

The arched loading area in the London Bridge area, which opened in 1836, has been transformed into various commercial facilities and exhibition spaces, including cafes and restaurants, over the past 30 years and has been attracting attention as a tourist attraction.

In the future, the province plans to complete the outline for the development of loading space at Osong Station by referring to examples such as the Bridge area and St. Pancras Station in London, England, Marunouchi Brick Square in Tokyo, Japan, and Promenade Folente in Paris, France.

Governor Kim said, “This visit will be an important opportunity to lay the foundation for achieving regional development and revitalization of tourism at the same time through the use of loading space at Osong Station.” He added, “We will establish a specific implementation plan and design various programs that take advantage of regional characteristics.” “he said.

Kim Jeong-hoo, director of the Urban Architecture Policy Research Institute at City University London, who accompanied the site, said, “I think development that utilizes the neglected and abandoned loading space of Osong Station is a good approach to raising the level of the city.”
