Revival Plans for Honolulu’s Historic Queen Theater Amid City Condemnation Efforts
Queen Theater’s Struggles in Kaimuki
The Queen Theater, opened in 1936 in Kaimuki, had a vibrant start as a playhouse. It later showcased contemporary films but faced controversy in the late 1970s and 1980s when its then-owner, Narciso Yu, began screening X-rated films. This decision led to multiple police raids and the theater’s closure in 1985.
For nearly 40 years, the theater has remained unused, attracting calls for revitalization or demolition. Tommy Waters, the Honolulu City Council Chair, initiated condemnation proceedings three years ago but paused them for potential renovations by the owner. With no significant progress, Waters is reigniting the condemnation process.
Residents hope to restore the theater as a cultural hub. Concerns about crime and the lack of entertainment options have fueled demands for action. Some locals feel a strong connection to the theater’s history and long for its revival. “There are kids now that are grown who have never seen the theater in operation,” said Mahlon Moore, a member of Friends of Queen Theater.
Adoree Yu, the current owner and Narciso Yu’s daughter, presented a renovation plan with phases stretching over three years. She attributed delays to her parents’ serious health issues but claimed she now has the authority and financial backing to proceed.
Many residents doubt the feasibility of her plan, citing high costs and years of inactivity. The theater’s assessed value has risen significantly, increasing the pressure on Yu to act.
The theater has a storied past. Originally popular for showing mainstream films, its decline began with the controversial shift to adult content. Efforts to close the theater faced legal challenges, but raids eventually forced it to shut down.
City officials support potential city acquisition for public use but have not defined specific plans. Waters expressed concern over the owner’s ability to fund renovations, predicting costs of $800,000, while others estimate it could reach millions.
The future of the Queen Theater is uncertain, with community members hoping for a revival that could bring back performances and films. The City Council will vote on the condemnation process in December, signaling a potential new chapter for this historic site.
