New Heart Pump Technology Saves Lives in Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.
A new heart pump called Impella is changing lives for patients in Metro Detroit. This small device, about the size of a pencil tip, helps individuals during critical heart conditions.
Doctors recently gathered to celebrate patients they saved using this technology. The procedure involves placing the pump through a patient’s leg to support their heart during a severe heart attack or heart failure.
Dr. Theodore Schrieber, a cardiologist at Henry Ford Health, explained that the Impella pump provides necessary blood circulation before more permanent treatments like stents or bypass surgeries can be done.
Patients who received the treatment shared their experiences. Rogelio Landin said he felt completely different after his procedure, recalling he was back to work just 48 hours later.
Dr. Amir Kaki expressed pride in their work, stating that seeing recovery stories like these inspires the medical team. Dr. Schrieber added that many patients would not be alive today without this life-saving treatment.
Although not every hospital offers this technology, doctors aim to expand its availability in Southeast Michigan to help more patients in need.
