World Knowledge Forum: Embracing the AI Era with Korea’s Strengths
Former Prime Minister Chung Un-chan emphasized the importance of leveraging Korea’s strengths to lead the artificial intelligence (AI) era, during his keynote speech at the ‘Maeil Business Newspaper World Knowledge Forum Busan’ held at the Paradise Hotel in Busan.
Chung highlighted Korea’s competitiveness, including its world-class ICT infrastructure, excellent human resources, solid manufacturing base, and innovative startup ecosystem. He also mentioned that Korea ranked first among 141 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2020 Global Competitiveness Report.
However, Chung also acknowledged the challenges Korea faces, particularly in terms of the number of AI research papers, where the United States and China are ahead. He emphasized the need for the government, companies, and academia to join forces to overcome these challenges.
Chung also discussed the importance of addressing ethical issues related to AI, such as its military use. He proposed three visions for a better future: ‘human-centered AI,’ ‘inclusive AI,’ and ‘responsible AI.’
Son Hyun-deok, CEO of Maeil Business Newspaper, highlighted Busan’s role in Korea’s economic miracle and its potential for future growth. He expressed his hope that the forum would be an opportunity to open the door to Busan’s future.
Mayor Park Hyung-joon of Busan emphasized the city’s focus on creating an efficient city by utilizing AI in various fields. He also mentioned the city’s efforts to foster AI companies and establish an AI convergence system for technological innovation.
Busan is positioning itself as a global smart city, with a strong driving force established to leap forward as a global hub city. The city is committed to pursuing innovation and growth through the use of AI and other technologies.
