Revolutionizing AI: Korea and US Unite in Groundbreaking Joint Research Platform in New York
Establishing a Joint AI Research Platform: Korea and the US Unite in New York
A groundbreaking joint research platform for artificial intelligence (AI) has been launched in New York, USA, marking a significant collaboration between Korea and the United States. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) have jointly established the ‘Global AI Frontier Lab’, a hub for innovative AI research and development.
The Korean government has committed to providing approximately 45 billion won in research and development budget over the next five years, starting this year. In addition, New York University will contribute approximately 42 billion won in research personnel and in-kind resources, further solidifying the partnership.
The joint research initiative will focus on three key areas: source AI, trust AI, and medical AI. A team of researchers from Korea will be dispatched to New York to collaborate with their US counterparts, fostering a spirit of international cooperation and knowledge-sharing.
Renowned AI expert Professor Yann LeCun of New York University, along with Professor Kyung-Hyun Cho, will serve as the first co-directors of the Global AI Frontier Lab. In his opening keynote speech, Professor LeCun highlighted Korea’s reputation as a hub for cutting-edge research in various fields, including theory, algorithms, and robotics.
During the press conference, Professor LeCun shared his insights on the current state of AI investment, expressing concerns that government-led initiatives may not be as effective as investments made by big tech companies. He noted that while countries like France and the United Arab Emirates are investing heavily in AI technology development, they may not be as competitive as major tech corporations.
This joint research platform is poised to drive innovation and advancement in the field of AI, with the potential to yield significant breakthroughs and discoveries. As the Global AI Frontier Lab embarks on this exciting journey, it is expected to make a lasting impact on the world of artificial intelligence.
