President’s Office Establishes Medical Manpower Supply and Demand Estimation Organization
The President’s Special Committee on Medical Reform is establishing a ‘medical manpower supply and demand estimation organization’ to more broadly accommodate the positions and demands of the medical community in the process of increasing the number of medical schools.
According to Yonhap News, a senior official in the President’s Office said, “The Special Committee on Medical Reform has completed deliberation on the direction and operation plan for forming a medical manpower supply and demand estimation body,” and “The number of doctors required by the medical community, etc., can be discussed in the supply and demand estimation body.”
The organization that estimates the supply and demand of medical personnel will be comprised of 10 to 15 experts, and will give the right to recommend a majority of experts to the physician group.
Accordingly, the position of the medical community is expected to be largely reflected in future decisions on the supply and demand of medical personnel.
A senior official in the President’s Office said, “As the medical community has been requesting that the medical community’s position be reflected in determining the size of the future doctor workforce, we have decided to establish an organization that can reflect that position.”
The estimation organization is operated as a permanent organization and estimates the future medical manpower needed based on the number of medical school graduates, Korea’s population structure, and health insurance data.
Afterwards, the Health and Medical Policy Deliberation Committee will make the final decision on the number of medical personnel needed based on the results calculated by the estimation organization.
