University-Based Ventures and Intellectual​ Property Strategies Symposium

Summary

Since the government ⁢decided on the Five-Year Startup Plan‍ on November 28, 2022, a wave of university-based ventures has been established at universities across⁤ the country, with ‍the number of academic ventures increasing by⁤ 506 from 3,782 in 2022 to 4,288 in 2023.

In this situation, when we look at the legal‌ professionals who should play‌ an important role in the startup ecosystem, we are faced​ with the challenge that⁢ there ​are few legal⁢ professionals who are​ working to‌ support university-based ventures.

We hope that ‌by touching‍ on intellectual property strategies in university-based ventures, this symposium ⁣will‍ provide an ⁣opportunity for as many ⁤legal professionals as possible to support university-based ⁢ventures that will lead the ‍way in the future.

Guest Speakers

Microwave Chemical​ Co., Ltd. is a startup from Osaka University that ⁤won the University Startup Award at ⁢the ‍Japan Startup⁤ Awards 2023.

We ⁤will be talking to Tsukahara Yasunori, the company’s founder and CSO (Chief Scientific Officer), and Hasegawa ‌Arata, an advisor ​to the company who​ has supported its growth, about the various hardships the company has faced along the​ way, and we will hear​ practical, on-the-job ‌explanations from them.

In addition, ⁤to ⁣deepen the discussion of ‌what intellectual property strategies should be from a theoretical and⁢ systematic perspective, we will invite Makoto Kobayashi, author of the book “Intellectual Property Strategy Recommendations” co-authored with Masahiro ‌Samejima, to discuss intellectual property strategies in university-based ventures.
