42Maru Selected to Lead Project for Developing Defense Technology Information Generation AI System

42Maru, a South Korean generative AI and AI language startup, has been chosen as the lead organization for a project to develop a Defense Technology Information Generation AI System to Improve Nuclear Weapon System Operational Rates.

This project is part of the Future Defense Bridge Technology Development Project 2024, commissioned by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.

Consortium and Project Details

42Maru has formed a consortium with the Korea Institute of Science and Information Technology (KISTI), which operates the CBM + Defense Center; Korea Institute for Defense Analyzes (KIDA), which runs the military logistics integrated information system; and Datamaker, a private AI data building company.

Together, they will carry out the Republic of Korea Army Logistics Management project, with a total project budget of 4.2 billion won ($3.2 million), over the next three years.

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to support the efficient operation of intelligent logistics support systems by applying tailor-made AI technologies to the defense sector in response to defense and logistics innovation and the rapid changes in social structures.

Key Developments and Applications

Through this project, 42Maru will develop a Retrieval-Incremental Production (RAG) and Question Answering (QA) system based on Large Language Models (LLMs) for military logistics integrated information system data, related laws, regulations, and guidelines.

The company also plans to build a generative AI platform specializing in defense in collaboration with KISTI. Furthermore, it plans to apply the latest generative AI models to the entire logistics lifecycle.

Future Plans and Expansion

Future plans include expanding the project’s research and development results to all branches of the military and introducing generative AI for predictive maintenance and report generation to improve military processes.

Technological Advantages

42Maru mitigates the hallucination phenomenon, one of the major disadvantages of large language models, by using its RAG42 (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) and MRC42 (Machine Reading and Understanding) technologies.

The company also develops and supplies LLM42, a lightweight model specialized for specialist industrial sectors.
