By He⁢ Liang, Science and Technology Daily reporter

The 2024 Paris Olympics have showcased China’s innovative products‍ and technologies in the sports industry, attracting global attention.‍ Yang Xuelu, Director of the Sports ⁤Economics Department ‍of the General ⁣Administration of Sports of China, highlighted the country’s scientific and technological innovation and manufacturing capabilities in the sports sector.

One notable example‍ is the “bullet time” technology used in beach volleyball, tennis, and judo events, allowing audiences⁢ to see athletes’ still images like‌ in science⁢ fiction ‍movies.⁤ Additionally, the Chinese national ‍team’s bicycles in track cycling⁢ events use T1100 carbon fiber materials, weighing only 1,150 grams, the ⁣lightest among ⁣similar products worldwide.

Since‍ the 18th⁢ CPC National Congress, China’s sports‍ industry has experienced significant growth, with the ⁣total scale and added value increasing at ⁤a rate higher than the GDP growth⁣ rate. The industry⁣ has formed a system led by competition performance, leisure and fitness, and jointly‌ developed by sports venue services,⁣ sports training, sports manufacturing, and sports media.

Data shows that from 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth ‌rate of the⁣ added value of the sports industry reached 15.4%,⁣ and‌ its proportion in the GDP of‍ that year ⁢increased from 0.6% to 1.08%. In 2023, the total import and export volume of China’s major sports service trade ⁤reached 52.89 billion yuan, an increase of 178% over the previous year.

The sporting goods industry is a crucial part of the sports industry, accounting for half of the sector. The State Sports General Administration has promoted the transformation and upgrading of the sporting goods industry, enhancing ‌innovation and quality. The administration has announced ‌two ‌batches of national-level specialized and innovative enterprises in the sports field and single⁢ champion enterprises in the manufacturing industry, with 80 and 15 enterprises in these categories, respectively.

Looking ahead, the General Administration of⁤ Sport of ‍China will focus on both government⁢ and‍ market ends. The administration will ⁢continue to improve policies, work‌ with the Ministry of Industry and Information‍ Technology to promote the high-quality development ‍of the sporting goods manufacturing ⁢industry, and cultivate high-end “Made in China” brands in ⁤the sports field.
