Rex Heuermann, a former New York City architect, pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026, to the murders of seven women and admitted to the death of an eighth woman in a series of killings known as the Gilgo Beach serial murders. Heuermann, 62, appeared in a Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, Long Island, where he waived his right to future appeals as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
The proceedings, presided over by Judge Timothy Mazzei, began shortly after 11:00 ET. Heuermann confirmed he was entering the plea of his own free will. During the hearing, he admitted to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack.
Heuermann also admitted to causing the death of Karen Vergata and transporting her body. Prosecutors stated that the admission regarding Vergata is covered by the plea for the other seven murders.
Sentencing and Legal Terms
As part of the deal with prosecutors, Heuermann has agreed to punishment consisting of several life sentences without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors have recommended three consecutive life sentences without parole for the killings of Barthelemy, Waterman, and Costello.

For the murders of Brainard-Barnes, Taylor, Costilla, and Mack, prosecutors have requested an additional 100-year sentence. Judge Mazzei is scheduled to determine the final sentence at a follow-up hearing on June 17, 2026.
Heuermann has agreed to cooperate with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit to assist in the understanding of criminal behavior.
Investigation and Victim Background
The murders occurred between 1993 and 2011. Many of the victims’ remains were discovered in marshland along the south coast of Long Island, most notably at Gilgo Beach. Many of the women had remained unidentified for years before the investigation progressed.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 on a street in Manhattan. Law enforcement identified him through a combination of mitochondrial DNA matches to the victims, cellphone records, an SUV, and a discarded pizza crust.
Attorney Gloria Allred, representing several family members of the victims, noted that some of the women were young mothers who turned to sex work to support their children due to a lack of funds for college or other meaningful employment alternatives.
When asked by Judge Mazzei about the murder of Melissa Barthelemy in 2009, Heuermann admitted he had caused her death through Strangulation
.
The calm, serene, almost grandfatherly image that Rex Heuermann portrayed since his arrest was a lie and, quite frankly, an insult to law enforcement and, more importantly, the families that had to endure that during every court appearance during the last two and a half years. Today he was exposed for exactly what he is, a sadistic, soulless, murderous monster.
Statement regarding Rex Heuermann
The court hearing was attended by the families of the victims, as well as Heuermann’s daughter and his ex-wife.
