One major change in Mark Grayson’s life in Invincible Season 3 is having a close group of superheroes fighting alongside him. Grayson may have fallen out of favor with Cecil Stedman and the Global Defense Agency, but most of his comrades support him and seek their own independence. Invincible’s Shrinking Rae, Robot/Rudy, Monster Girl/Amanda, and Atom Eve feel they are better off away from the GDA.

Unfortunately for the young heroes, Season 3, Episode 7, “What Have I Done?” has plunged the team into turmoil. This is due to a shocking death that will cause major ripple effects down the line. Rex Splode wasn’t always the best friend, colleague, or even hero, but his brave sacrifice would save others among the Guardians, both immediately and later down the line. Rex won’t be the last fan-favorite character to die, but his death hit quite hard.

Updated on August 15, 2025, by Ajay Aravind: Season 3 of Invincible featured some of the biggest story transitions, highlighting Omni-Man’s potential for redemption while the Invincible War makes things extremely difficult for Mark. Rex Splode’s death wasn’t on anyone’s cards, though — as the Guardians had survived multiple near-death events in the past. Although it was heartbreaking to see such a longtime fan-favorite bite the dust, Rex’s bravery was certainly admirable. Considering the character’s impact on the series, we have updated this article with some more relevant information.

Rex has had a wild journey in Invincible. He went from being a spoiled brat who cheated on Eve with Dupli-Kate to a hero who has learned selflessness. Rex also struggled with mortality for a bit after he and Rae almost died fighting the Lizard League in Invincible Season 2. Since then, Rex has been more mature, especially with Mark. He feels like he’s balanced and in the right frame of mind to be a superhero who evolved from his Teen Team days. Evidence of his character evolution comes in the form of Rex not minding Rae wanting to retire. He understands the rigors of the job and that not everyone is attuned to it.

When Rae moves into a new home, she asks Rex to spend some romantic time with her to cement the future. They are ready to start a relationship, but things go awry in Invincible Season 3, Episode 7when evil Mark variants arrive. Angstrom Levy sends the evil variants to begin the Invincible War. These villains attack all over the globe. Rex heads off to duty, not knowing what he’s walking into. He makes it clear that Rae needs to stay behind rather than get dragged into the mess again. Little does he know, this will be the last moment they share filled with love.

Rex ends up fighting one of the variants (nicknamed Gogglesvincible) to save Rudy, Bulletproof, and Amanda. Rex uses his explosive sticks, charging them up with kinetic energy a la X-Men’s Gambit. He buys them time to escape, but it leads to him being wounded badly. When the Invincible variant grabs him to finish him off, Rex confesses he has one item left to charge: his skeleton. He becomes a bomb and kills Gogglesvincible, along with himself.

Invincible Killing Rex Deeply Impacted Mark and Eve

When the Invincible War ends and Angstrom’s threat is quelled, Mark is depressed. Eve has been injured in the fight as well, and knowing that Rex is dead adds insult to injury. Mark really wanted Rex by his side for when the Viltrumites invaded, as he trusted him so much. They did well against Simu Liu’s Multi-Paul, so Mark was looking forward to training together. Rex’s death later fueled Mark in the fight against Conquest, a Viltrumite enforcer who arrived to bully Mark into enslaving the planet.

Mark is vulnerable and emotional, allowing him the strength needed to neutralize Conquest. Being so angry could have also lead to Mark’s worst nightmare: more casualties and collateral damage. That haunted him after fighting Omni-Man, which led to the rise of Aaron Paul’s Powerplex. Mark is also blaming himself for the evil Invincibles and Angstrom raiding, and Rex’s death just adds more guilt on his already tiring shoulders.

Meanwhile, Eve did love Rex deeply, and was the first person she considered her soulmate. In time, she could follow Rae’s path and decide staying away from the superhero life might be best. If she continues fighting monsters and aliens, she could put her parents or loved ones like William in danger. The higher probability is that she, too, will embrace the fury within. Atom Eve is unlocking more of her material-generating abilities, so she can easily level up as she does in the comics.

Outside the physical component, Eve has to be mentally sturdy. If she’s a liability in the field, the Viltrumites will take her out easily, which could distract Mark as well. It’s just a giant ball of grief and trauma. This trifecta has gone from a love triangle to colleagues who need to be there for each other. Unfortunately for all, Rex goes out the way he always wanted: like a hero and on his terms. Mark and Eve will need to remain responsible and inspired in the wake of this unspeakable tragedy, since their planet needs them to be.

Invincible Killing Off Rex Affected Rae as Well

Rex and Rae were a big change from the Invincible comics, since Ray was a man who died in the Lizard League fight. The Prime Video series re-imagined him as female, and had her surviving the brawl to offer Rex a glimmer of hope and a chance at a happy ending. His parents sold him, so he ended up being made into a weapon by the government. As such, potentially pairing him with Rae was a positive sign that fans were hoping would develop into something substantial.

Rae even knew there was a chance Rex might have wanted to make up for those cruel days with the Guardians of the Globe and have a normal life with her. That’s now been ripped away, and it’s likely Rae will grow despondent. Eve is there as a shoulder to lean on, but following Conquest’s unexpected attack and the disastrous outcome on Mark Grayson, there could be more death and destruction to come before the heroes get a chance to heal.

Invincible Killing Rex Will Affect the Other Guardians

Rudy, who cloned himself from Rex, is devastated knowing the sacrifice that was made. This will kick him into overdrive. In Invincible Season 3, Rudy has been working on weapons to defend the planet. He had already made a belt to stop Amanda from aging backwards, so this could be the catalyst for him to build his robot fleet, as per the comics. Rudy will have to temper his rage, however. When he lets it get the best of him, he goes off the rails and becomes egotistical like Iron Man.

Amanda is older and more centered, due to the curse that had her living for centuries, but she will also be in agony. She did have a crush on Rex until she fell for Rudy. In time, she saw Rex as a big brother. Amanda might even help avenge him if the Viltrumites make future incursions. The same goes for Bulletproof. This could see him and these rogues realize they’re better off with Cecil. Earth needs a united front right now. Cecil has kept the door open for all of them to come back, rebuild the Guardians, and have Mark lead.

With the Immortal and Kate retiring to get married, all hands on deck are needed. The first litmus test came with the Viltrumite Conquest. Beyond that, whoever survives will have big decisions to make. They can honor Rex’s legacy and batten down the hatches for tomorrow. They can also quit in what would ultimately be a human arc on a planet that feels like it is on borrowed time until Viltrumites come to claim it. Then again, the Amazon series has been largely faithful to the comics until now, so it’s likely that most heroes will continue fighting.

Rex Splode Briefly Reappears in Invincible: Reboot?

Invincible: Reboot? is a three-part series set within the overarching graphic novel timeline — Mark is sent back into the past, where he meets his father Nolan before the Grayson family was destroyed. Although Mark tries to talk to Eve about Teen Team, she has no idea who he even is. This is where Rex comes in, revealing that he’s still dating Eve at this point. Mark, Rex, and the others later fight against villains like Doc Seismic, Lizard League, and the Reanimen.

As glad as he is that Rex is still alive, Mark gets annoyed when Rex keeps bringing up his relationship with Eve. However, he eventually learns that his presence in the timeline, not to mention his attempt to change events, effectively kept Rex’s affair with Kate a secret, explaining why Eve never stopped dating him. That said, fans wonder if Rex’s character growth —still shown to be immature in Infinite: Reboot?— would only happen because Mark tells him it did. Unfortunately for Rex fans, Mark soon returns to the original timeline where Rex remains dead.
