RFK Jr. Fires Vaccine Advisory Panel ‍Amid Trust Concerns

Updated June 10, 2025

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.has removed all members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an⁢ independent panel advising the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccine use. Kennedy announced the decision in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, a week ⁣after the American College of Physicians ⁢(ACP) criticized HHS for‍ eroding ⁤public trust.

Kennedy,⁤ a vocal critic of‍ current vaccine policy, stated his ⁢aim is to rebuild public confidence in vaccines. He asserted that HHS will prioritize restoring trust above any pro- or anti-vaccine agenda. detractors, however, fear⁣ the move could inject politics into vaccine guidance and undermine faith in public health institutions. The shakeup in federal vaccine recommendations raises concerns about the ⁢future of vaccine policy.

Dr. ‍Paul Offit, a former ACIP member and co-developer⁢ of the rotavirus vaccine, told ⁣STAT that the committee⁢ has considerably improved public health for both children and‍ adults. He argued that ACIP members deserve recognition ⁢for their service, not dismissal.

Offit also called on Sen. Bill ⁢Cassidy, R-La., chairman of the Senate Health ⁣Committee, to address the ACIP disbandment publicly. Cassidy, who initially hesitated to support Kennedy’s appointment due to ‍vaccine skepticism, ultimately voted in favor after securing commitments, including preserving the vaccine advisory committee.

The ACP, in a recent article, criticized the CDC’s decision to cease recommending routine COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women and healthy children. They also cited the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) limits⁤ on COVID-19 booster vaccines, saying it complicates ACIP’s⁣ ability to approve off-label vaccine use and ensure access through ‍Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements.

Kennedy claimed some ousted ACIP⁣ members were last-minute Biden administration appointees. Without the overhaul, he said, the Trump administration wouldn’t have had the chance to appoint a majority of new members until 2028. He also alleged ACIP has been plagued by conflicts of interest ⁣and has become a rubber⁤ stamp for⁢ vaccines.

Russell Vought, director of the ⁣Office of Management and Budget, echoed this sentiment, telling CNN that the National ⁣Institutes of Health (NIH) has been weaponized against the American people. He said a proposed restructuring would refocus NIH’s mission and reduce⁢ unnecessary bureaucracy.

However,HHS agencies, including ACIP,adhere to stringent policies⁣ regarding financial conflicts of interest, with no documented breaches in recent years.⁤ All members of federal vaccine advisory panels must disclose potential conflicts and ⁤recuse themselves when necessary.

The decision follows the resignation of Dr.Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos, a pediatric infectious disease expert and former ACIP co-leader, who stepped down last week, stating she could no longer serve the moast vulnerable under current conditions.

The Biden administration previously relied on ACIP’s transparent process to guide ‍pandemic-era vaccine deployment and address equity and safety. the committee’s scientific integrity has long been⁣ viewed as critical to maintaining public confidence in the nation’s immunization strategy.

“HHS will put the restoration of public trust above any ⁢pro- or antivaccine agenda,” kennedy said Monday.

What’s next

With Kennedy’s overhaul, the future direction of federal ⁤vaccine recommendations is⁢ uncertain. The new appointments and‍ policy shifts will be ⁤closely watched by public health experts and the general public alike.
