The new food pyramid released with US health secretary Robert F kennedy Jr’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans ⁣(DGA) prioritizes animal-based proteins, including cheese and red meats high in saturated fats, over plant-based proteins, prompting concern from health and environmental experts.

This⁣ shift aligns with Kennedy’s prior indications that he intends to recommend increased saturated fat ⁢consumption as part of the “Make America healthy again” initiative.

Dr. Cheryl Anderson, an American heart Association board member and professor at the University of California San Diego, noted the delayed release of the guidelines, stating they were issued considerably later than the typical six-month timeframe following the dietary guidelines advisory committee’s report.

While Anderson acknowledged positive aspects of ⁤the guidelines, such as the emphasis on “real food,” reducing processed foods, and limiting⁣ added sugars, ⁤she expressed concern over the food pyramid’s visual depiction.Images of steak and cheese were prominently displayed above⁤ plant-based proteins, contradicting the written guidelines regarding⁣ saturated fat intake.

“I think it will be a challenge to keep saturated fat⁢ intake within 10% of overall kilocalories. Now, that, to me, is a confusing⁣ message for the American public.”
