BBC 6 Music film and television critic Rhianna Dhillon has revealed a secret ovarian cancer diagnosis and shared that she underwent a full hysterectomy. The 37-year-old broadcaster shared the news with fans on Instagram, posting a photograph of herself resting in a hospital bed wearing a hospital gown.
Dhillon Undergoes Hysterectomy After BRCA1 Mutation Diagnosis
Dhillon explained in her social media caption that she carries the BRCA1 genetic mutation, which places individuals at a significantly higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. Although she was aware of her elevated risk, she stated that she did not expect to receive a diagnosis at such a young age. MacMillan Cancer Support notes that changes in the BRCA gene can cause a higher risk of several cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancer.
The broadcaster received her diagnosis two weeks prior to her hospital update and underwent a full hysterectomy on Friday. She described the operation as an absolute full stop on one part of her life that she was not ready to say goodbye to, alongside the initiation of a life stage she had hoped to postpone for another 15 years. The procedure follows her previous preventative steps in June 2023, when she began undergoing operations for a double mastectomy nine years after testing positive for the faulty BRCA1 gene.
Upcoming Treatment And Impact On Broadcasting Work
Looking ahead at her medical timeline, Dhillon stated that the next six months are looking very chemo-y. She noted that her schedule for the upcoming film awards season will look slightly different as a result of her ongoing care. However, she confirmed to her audience that she intends to continue working throughout her treatment.
NHS guidelines state that ovarian cancer affects the ovaries and mostly impacts women over the age of 50. Common symptoms outlined by Cancer Research UK include persistent pain in the lower abdomen, bloating, increased frequency of urination, unexplained tiredness, and changes in bowel habits that start after age 50. Dhillon has worked with the BBC since 2011, serving as a critic across BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, 5 Live, Radio 2, and 6 Music.
Dhillon Thanks Family and Friends for Support
Dhillon expressed deep gratitude for her support network, singling out her mother, father, brother, and Mike Muncer, for their assistance during hospital stays and medical appointments. She also thanked her circle of friends for constant communication, voice notes, and tokens of support.
Dearest, best friends. The love you have shown me. The messages, the consistent showing up, the voice notes, the tokens of love, you have no idea how much you have kept me together, even when I’ve felt so utterly broken. I don’t think I’ve ever really understood how much community meant until I had to rely on mine.
