Rhysida Adeleke: Concerns Over Honesty – The Irish Times
Concerns Surrounding rhasidat Adeleke’s Withdrawal
My primary concern regarding Rhasidat Adeleke is a lack of complete openness, both with herself and those around her. This opacity makes it difficult to fully understand the situation surrounding her withdrawal from the World athletics Championships. Her Instagram post felt unusual, especially for one of Ireland’s most prominent athletes; a vague social media message wasn’t the ideal way to address the situation.
She cites lingering injuries and setbacks, but offers no specifics, and it appears Athletics Ireland was also unaware of the extent of these issues. The outpouring of overly positive support online isn’t necessarily helpful either. Athletes in these situations often need realism, not just encouragement. The lack of detail is puzzling – a simple explanation of a hamstring issue and its recurrence would suffice. It’s unclear why she’s being so guarded. It’s perfectly acceptable to admit training hasn’t gone well or that she isn’t currently fit enough to compete at her expected level.Athletes readily answer questions during success, but often withdraw when facing difficulties. I, too, experienced this tendency, and believe athletes need someone to offer honest, even unwelcome, feedback and potential solutions.Adeleke may have made some missteps this year, falling into the trap of believing there was ample time to prepare given the late timing of the Tokyo championships. Now, she needs a plan for moving forward.Setbacks are unavoidable, and at 23, she’s at a crucial point in her career. I experienced a similar unraveling at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and it took me two years to make the necessary changes.
Adeleke should analyze what worked and what didn’t, reassess her priorities, and consider a fresh approach. This might involve a new coach and advisors – someone outside her current circle to provide an objective reality check. While her recent race in London wasn’t disastrous, questions remain about what happened afterward. It’s possible the issue is more mental than physical; struggling to adjust to not consistently being at the top can be challenging. it’s critically important to minimize distractions unrelated to her sport to maintain focus on competing at the highest level.
