Rice Revolution: Vietnam Eyes Thailand’s Success in Creating a Flood Season Rice Brand
Circular Rice Production Model in Tam Nong District
Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Chairman of Tam Nong District People’s Committee, announced the implementation of a circular rice production model in the Winter-Spring and Summer-Autumn crops, covering over 60 hectares, combined with fish farming in the flood season. This innovative approach yields a total profit of over 55 million VND/ha/year from 2 rice crops and 1 fish crop. Additionally, the Cooperative organizes flood-season tourism, generating a revenue of over 70 million VND/year.
This year, Tam Nong district expanded the rice area under the new model to over 160 hectares. The government invested in infrastructure, including electricity lines, water pumping equipment, and connections for agricultural product consumption, as well as dredging irrigation in the fields.
Leaders in Tam Nong district acknowledged the effectiveness of reducing seed sowing and using organic fertilizers to replace inorganic fertilizers. This approach has proven successful in changing farmers’ habits, shifting towards organic and ecological rice production, and adapting to climate change.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan’s Insights
Minister Le Minh Hoan emphasized the importance of raising awareness among producers and consumers about safe, circular, modern, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and ecological agricultural production. He advocated for developing multi-value agriculture, applying advanced science and technology, digitizing farming data, and increasing income on the same area.
According to Minister Hoan, the traditional agricultural production model will be converted to a greenhouse gas emission reduction model, aiming to achieve carbon emission reduction credits for the entire project area. A pilot model of high-tech integration will be built, contributing to the construction of new rural areas and the implementation of the Agricultural Restructuring Project of Dong Thap province.
Minister Hoan cited the success of Thailand’s circular farming model, which produced organic rice products sold at prices many times higher than the market price, while adapting to climate change. He suggested that Tam Nong district and Dong Thap province could create a brand for rice during the flood season, producing safe agricultural products while increasing value. This model combines the ecological environment, people, and landscape of the flood season.
