Richard Kind has joined the West End revival of Mel Brooks’ The Producers
at the Garrick Theatre, stepping into the role of Max Bialystock for a limited guest-starring engagement.
Kind began his seven-week run on March 23, 2026, temporarily replacing Andy Nyman. The transition allows Nyman to appear in the world premiere of The Psychic
, a production he co-wrote with Jeremy Dyson, which is playing at the York Theatre Royal.
The veteran actor’s tenure as Bialystock in London is scheduled to continue until May 9, 2026. Andy Nyman is expected to return to the production at the Garrick Theatre on May 11, 2026.
A History with the Role
This performance marks a return to a character Kind has played multiple times over the last two decades. He previously portrayed the fraudulent theatrical producer Max Bialystock on Broadway in 2004, following Nathan Lane in the role.

Kind also reprised the role in a 2012 production at the Hollywood Bowl. In a statement regarding his return, Kind described the experience as a hat trick
and praised the work of Mel Brooks, referring to the show as a comic masterpiece
.
Mel Brooks is a genius. Every time I come back to The Producers, I’m reminded what a comic masterpiece it is—the jokes, the infectious energy of the story, the sheer audacity of it all—it still feels as fresh as ever.
Richard Kind
Mel Brooks expressed his enthusiasm for Kind’s casting, stating that when the need arose to fill Nyman’s role, Kind was the only name that came to mind. Brooks described the actor as a true force of nature
with enough energy to fill two stages
.
