Richard Tyler, the designer who dressed icons like cher, Elton John, and Diana Ross, is poised for a return to the fashion world. Alongside this exciting prospect, Tyler and his wife, Trafficante, are also parting with their stunning Villa Arno estate in South Pasadena, a property steeped in Hollywood history and personal memories. this marks a new chapter for the couple and a potential resurgence of Tyler’s celebrated, edgy aesthetic.
From Australian Roots to WWD Cover Star
tyler’s journey began in Australia, where he learned the art of sewing from his mother. He initially focused on menswear in the mid-1980s, a somewhat unconventional path, before expanding into womenswear in 1989. This bold move quickly established him as a force in the fashion industry, culminating in a dream realized: appearing on the cover of women’s Wear Daily.
“Be on the cover of Women’s Wear Daily again,” he recalled with a laugh, remembering the anticipation surrounding his first New york Public Library fashion show. “The most exciting and nerve-wracking time in my life… For my whole life, all I was interested in was to be on the cover of Women’s Wear Daily. I think our show was on a Thursday, and Friday I rushed to the newsstand, but nothing. I went again Monday and nothing. And then finally on Tuesday, there it was.”
This achievement cemented Tyler’s status, and throughout the 1980s and 90s, his designs graced the backs of some of the biggest names in entertainment. His signature style - a blend of L.A. cool and sophisticated tailoring - resonated with a generation. He was recognized with three awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of america and even lent his design expertise to create uniforms for Delta Airlines.
A style Ahead of Its Time & A Hollywood Homecoming
While Tyler’s time at Anne Klein & Co. in the early 1990s proved a mismatch – his edgy vision didn’t align with the label’s more conservative aesthetic – his influence never waned. In fact, his designs are experiencing a revival, as evidenced by the recent interest sparked by the filming of “Palm Royale” at Villa Arno.
The production team, featuring Kristen Wiig, Naomi watts, and Laura Dern, inadvertently facilitated a reunion between Tyler and Dern, whom he had previously dressed for significant events. “people come in to do a movie shoot, and say, ‘Oh my god, it’s Richard Tyler. You’re my favorite designer. I wish I could get your clothes again.’ We here that especially now, when a style has returned that is befitting for Richard,” trafficante shared.
The cyclical nature of fashion is clearly on Tyler’s side.A period when tailored jackets, coats, suits, and faux furs fell out of favor is now giving way to a renewed appreciation for these classic pieces. This resurgence, coupled with Tyler’s inherent talent, fuels the anticipation for his return.
family Legacy & A New Beginning at Villa Arno
The Tyler family’s connection to the fashion world extends to the next generation. Their son, edward, is also a designer, incorporating his father’s influence into his work in music and film.A charming anecdote highlights the family’s deep roots in the industry: during one of Richard Tyler’s fashion shows, supermodel Naomi Campbell famously carried the then three-month-old Edward down the runway.
The couple intends to include Edward in their fashion comeback, recognizing his upbringing within the industry. Their decision to sell Villa Arno, the stunning South Pasadena estate where they raised their family, is being met with understanding and support from Edward. ”It’s funny I said to him, ‘I’m sorry that we’re going to sell it.’ He said, ‘I don’t have that feeling at all. I’m just lucky to have lived in all of these beautiful places. I don’t have any feelings that we have to hang onto them.'” Trafficante recounted. “he’s good support for us.”
Villa Arno itself is a landmark property, attracting film crews and embodying a glamorous lifestyle. Its sale represents not just a change of residence, but a symbolic turning of the page, allowing Richard Tyler to focus on
