Rick Hurst, the actor who played the endearingly dim Deputy Cletus Hogg on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” died in Los Angeles at age 79.His unexpected passing prompted heartfelt reactions from former castmates.

Born in Houston on Jan. 1, 1946, Hurst’s acting career began early.He recalled in a podcast being tapped for a library commercial at age 5, earning a chocolate soda for his efforts. He honed his craft with theater studies at Tulane University and a master’s degree from Temple University before moving to Los Angeles.
Hurst’s television debut came in 1972 on “Sanford and Son.” Besides his memorable role in “The Dukes of Hazzard” from 1979 to 1985, he appeared in numerous shows, including “MASH,” “Little House on the Prairie,” and “The Six Million Dollar Man.” His final credit was in the 2016 short film, “B My Guest.” Hurst often expressed gratitude for the success and dedicated fanbase of “The dukes of Hazzard.” He recognized the importance of the General Lee and the stunt performers to the show’s appeal.
Hurst’s scheduled appearances at Cooter’s in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., from July 3-7 were canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, according to a Facebook post by Cooter’s. the appearances will be rescheduled.
Hurst is survived by his two children, Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in “Sons of Anarchy” and “The Walking Dead,” and Collin hurst. He was married to Candace Kaniecki and Shelly Weir.
