Canadian actor Rick Moranis is returning to the role of Dark Helmet in the upcoming film Spaceballs: The New One, scheduled for theatrical release in April 2027.

Moranis’ transition from Hollywood retirement to Spaceballs: The New One

Moranis was a prominent comedy figure in the 1980s and early 1990s with roles in Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Parenthood, and The Flintstones. After the death of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky, in 1991, Moranis reduced his professional workload to become the primary parent for their two children.

He eventually stepped away from most screen work because the requirements of location filming conflicted with his home life. While often characterized as a retirement, Moranis continued selective work in voice acting and comedy music.

Speaking during the film’s Comic-Con presentation, Moranis described the process of acting again as strange but increasingly enjoyable. He noted the contrast of seeing original co-stars alongside younger performers who are now the age he was during the original 1987 production, which he said made the set feel like a time warp.

Cast and production details for the 2027 sequel

The sequel features a mix of legacy performers and new additions. Mel Brooks returns to play Yogurt and President Skroob, appearing alongside original cast members Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and George Wyner. The new cast includes Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.

The production intends to utilize the time gap since the original film as part of the comedy. Moranis stated that returning to the Dark Helmet costume felt surreal, specifically citing the physical details of the helmet and the recognition of the nearly four decades that have passed since the first film.

Expanded targets for science-fiction parody

The original 1987 film focused its parody on Star Wars and the broader tropes of science-fiction, mocking studio ambition and merchandising.

Potential targets for the new film include:

  • The expansion of franchises into prequels, sequels, and streaming series.
  • The development of massive superhero cinematic universes.
  • The reliance of studios on recognizable intellectual property.
  • Fan theories and the specific language used to announce franchise expansions.
  • Modern digital effects and streaming spin-offs.

The role of Dark Helmet and performance style

The character of Dark Helmet was designed around Moranis’ specific comedic timing, which blended power with insecurity.

Moranis’ return is framed not as a correction of his time away, but as a selective choice now that his children are adults and his responsibilities have shifted. By returning to a character tied to the specific style of comedy that defined his early career, the actor maintains continuity without ignoring the 30-year gap in his live-action filmography.
