Bebeto de Freitas, Pioneering Figure in Brazilian Volleyball, Dies at 72
Bebeto de Freitas, a central figure in the development of Brazilian volleyball, died on January 15, 2026, at the age of 72, according to a statement from the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV). He had been undergoing treatment for cancer.
Freitas’s impact extended beyond the court. He served as coach of the Brazilian men’s national volleyball team from 1988 to 1996, leading them to a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The CBV credited Freitas with modernizing the training methods and fostering a winning culture within the program.
Before his coaching career, Freitas was a prosperous volleyball player.he competed in the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games. he also played professionally for Flamengo, one of Brazil’s most popular sports clubs.
