Filmmaker Ridley Scott is preparing to bring Michael Fassbender’s synthetic character David back to the center of the Alien franchise for a follow-up to 2017’s Alien: Covenant, according to confirmed reports from the Los Angeles Times and Collider. Nearly a decade after Covenant concluded with a cliffhanger that saw David depart for Origae-6 with thousands of colonists and Xenomorph embryos, Scott has officially confirmed that a new project is in development to continue the storyline established in Prometheus and Covenant.

According to reporting from the Los Angeles Times, Scott revealed that the upcoming story will follow David as he creates a brave new world for himself. The director remains focused on the dangers of artificial intelligence, explaining to the publication that AIs can go off and behave like bombs. This new development arrives while the franchise expands across multiple fronts. 2024’s Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez, grossed nearly 351 million dollars worldwide and earned positive reviews from critics. Meanwhile, television audiences await the trajectory of Noah Hawley’s series Alien: Earth. Yet, the fate of Fassbender’s murderous synthetic character left hanging at the end of Covenant has remained unresolved until now.
Behind the Scenes of the Franchise Expansion
According to industry reporting by Jeff Sneider cited by Filmstarts, production movement on potential sequels like Alien: Romulus 2 has faced delays, partly due to Scott’s own creative ambitions for the universe he launched in 1979. While Fede Alvarez initially expressed strong interest in bringing David back into the narrative, reports indicate that Scott made it clear he intends to guide the return of that specific character himself. Alvarez announced in late 2025 that he would not occupy the director’s chair for the Romulus sequel, choosing instead to focus on personal projects. Although a script has reportedly been finished for months, studios have yet to name a replacement director. Concurrently, Scott remains occupied with preparations for a historical epic film adapting Treasure Island with Hugh Jackman.
