Riga International Film Festival Announces 2024 Program,Showcasing Emerging Nordic Cinema
The Riga International Film Festival (Riga IFF) has unveiled it’s 2024 program,highlighting a strong selection of films from the Nordic region. The festival,a key event in the Baltic film calendar,will run from October 17-27,2024. This year’s edition features a diverse range of cinematic voices, with a particular focus on debut films and emerging filmmakers.
Nordic Films Take Center stage
Several films from Norway, Denmark, lithuania, and Finland are featured in the competition. Notably, the Latvian film “Solomamma” is participating, having previously collaborated with composer Kārlis Auzāns through Mistrus Media for its soundtrack. Auzāns is a Latvian composer known for his work in film and television.
Danish director Emily Talund’s debut film, ”Unweested” (Weightless), is also a key selection. The film is described as a Scandinavian response to Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” (2017), exploring the universal themes of teenage anxieties and first love. “Lady Bird” garnered critical acclaim and five Academy Award nominations, establishing a benchmark for coming-of-age stories.
Festival Support and Accessibility
Riga IFF receives support from a range of organizations, including the State Culture Capital Foundation, the EU Creative europe - Media program, the Riga City Council, the Latvian Investment and Advancement Agency, the National Film Center, the Riga Investment Agency, and the Tourism Agency. This diverse funding base underscores the festival’s importance to Latvian culture and economy.
