As the days grow shorter and autumn deepens, the city comes alive with celebrations of Michael’s Day, a traditional time marking the autumn solstice and a moment to honor the harvest. This weekend offers a wealth of opportunities for families and individuals to connect with folklore, creativity, and community spirit.
A Weekend of Festivities
The celebrations begin on Saturday at the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, where Michael’s Day rituals will be held from 10 am to 5 pm. Visitors can experience authentic traditions at the Vidzeme Farmer Farm, guided by Andris and Beatrice Kapusti. This provides a unique glimpse into the historical roots of the holiday.
sunday promises an even wider array of events, all kicking off at noon. The Small guild Garden will host a Michael’s Day festivity featuring the folklore group “Vilcene.” Simultaneously occurring, mežaparks Great Stage (Kokars Hall and the surrounding outdoor space) will be transformed for “Cut the Sun in Michael!” This large-scale event boasts a full day of activities, including creative workshops, lively competitions, games, and sporting events for children. Attendees can also explore the State border Guard Information tent, enjoy a market, and groove to the sounds of DJ Vink. The entertainment continues with a play, singing from the folklore group “Malibie,” and a concert by the “Jakob noiman Festival Band.”
For those seeking a more localized experience, the Cultural Center “Imanta” will host “Michael’s Rich Man” starting at noon. This event focuses on hands-on creativity with workshops for children and young people, a traditional Michael’s Day Play
