Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) has established a new microbiology laboratory within its Science Hub’s Institute of Microbiology and Virology. The facility is designed to advance high-level microbiology research and translate scientific findings into practical public health solutions.

The laboratory was opened on March 17, 2026. It was created through a partnership with the laboratory equipment manufacturer Biosan Ltd, which provided an investment of more than EUR 90,000.

Technical Infrastructure and Workflow

The facility is equipped with more than 25 devices manufactured by Biosan. These instruments support a comprehensive microbiology workflow, including:

Technical Infrastructure and Workflow
  • Sample preparation, mixing, shaking and centrifugation
  • Incubation and cell cultivation
  • Nucleic acid isolation
  • Analytical measurements

Research Goals and Public Health Applications

Researchers at the laboratory focus on the cultivation of beneficial bacteria and the study of their growth patterns. The objective is to isolate compounds from these bacteria that can inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms.

A primary area of study involves testing these compounds to determine if they can reduce the growth of dangerous microbes. Scientists are specifically investigating the ability of these compounds to disrupt biofilms, which are persistent layers formed by microbes.

This laboratory significantly strengthens our research capacity and opens up new opportunities for high-level microbiology research. Our goal is to ensure that scientific results are translated into practical solutions that help improve microbiological safety and contribute to public health

Zaiga Nora-Krūkle, Director of the RSU Institute of Microbiology and Virology

Beyond primary research, the laboratory serves as an environment for student training. It also provides a space for the validation of new technologies, further strengthening the link between academic research and industrial application.

The collaboration between RSU and Biosan Ltd highlights a strategic effort to integrate academia and industry to improve microbiological safety. The university aims to use the facility to ensure that scientific results are effectively applied to enhance public health.
