Rīga is preparing to mark the 36th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia’s independence on May 4, 2026, with a wide-ranging cultural program coordinated by the Rīga City Council. The celebrations, which coincide with a four-day holiday weekend following public holidays on May 1 and May 3, will feature a series of ceremonial, musical, and community-driven events across the capital.

Commemorations at the Freedom Monument

The Freedom Monument in Freedom Square will serve as the primary focal point for the anniversary. According to the Rīga City Council’s external communications department, a central feature of the celebration is the creation of a symbolic floral composition titled The Latvia of Flowers. This collaborative project allows residents and visitors to contribute to the arrangement starting at 10 a.m. On May 4, with the installation remaining on display until the evening of May 5.

The schedule at the Freedom Monument includes several high-profile musical and ceremonial events:

  • Brass Band Parade and Concert: Scheduled from 11 a.m. To 1:30 p.m., featuring brass bands from various Latvian educational institutions.
  • Official Flower-Laying Ceremony: A formal commemoration taking place at 2 p.m.
  • Regional Choir Concert: A performance by choirs from different regions of Latvia, scheduled from 3 p.m. To 5 p.m.
  • Singing Resolution Concert: An evening event taking place from 8 p.m. To 10 p.m.

City-Wide Cultural Activities

Beyond the ceremonial events at the Freedom Monument, the city has organized a variety of family-oriented and educational activities. Vērmanes Garden will be transformed into a festival space designed as an educational adventure for families. The broader program for the holiday includes creative workshops, a film marathon, and the Put a folk garment initiative, encouraging participants to wear traditional Latvian attire.

To facilitate movement across the city during the celebrations, public transport in Rīga will be provided free of charge on May 4, 2026.

Regional Observances

While Rīga hosts the primary cultural program, the celebrations extend to other parts of the country. Events are also scheduled in Aizkraukle to mark the anniversary of the restoration of independence by the Supreme Council.

The 36th anniversary marks the date when the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia formally restored the country’s independence, a pivotal moment in the nation’s modern history that continues to be commemorated annually with national flags flown across the country.
