Seiji Ozawa (1935-2024), the world-famous conductor who sadly passed away on February 6, 2024,’s greatest hit album was the “New Year Concert” in which he co-starred with the Vienna Philharmonic. On January 1, 2002, he became the first Japanese conductor to take the podium at a New Year’s concert, a memorable live performance that was broadcast live around the world and became a hot topic in Japan that went beyond classical music. The CD sold more than 1 million copies worldwide (more than 800,000 copies in Japan alone) and the video sold more than 100,000 copies, which is unprecedented for a classic work. The music selection includes famous pieces such as the Overture to “The Bat”, the waltz “Viennese Temperament”, “The Artist’s Life”, “The Beautiful Blue Danube”, the Polka Mazurka “Dragonfly”, “Perpetual Motion”, and “Radetzky March”. It also includes a rare piece (and a fascinating piece and performance), “The Devil’s Dance” by Josef Hermesberger, and as evidenced by its exceptional sales, it is a piece that anyone can enjoy.
