South Texas College Launches First-of-its-Kind Cybersecurity Clinic

South Texas College (STC) has launched a pioneering Cybersecurity Clinic, the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley, aimed at bolstering the region’s digital defenses and providing practical training for the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. The clinic, funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant and the national Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics, offers free cybersecurity services to small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

The initiative addresses a critical need for cybersecurity expertise in the region. According to STC officials, the Rio Grande Valley is experiencing rapid digital growth, making it increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. The clinic aims to bridge this gap by providing essential security assessments and guidance to organizations that often lack the resources to protect themselves.

Hands-on Experience for Students

A core component of the clinic is its focus on experiential learning. Students enrolled in STC’s Computer and Information Technologies (BAT-CIT) bachelor’s program, as well as its Cybersecurity associate and certificate programs, gain hands-on experience in real-world cybersecurity scenarios. Services offered by the clinic include risk assessment, vulnerability analysis, incident response planning, and cyber defense strategies.

The clinic currently operates with a cohort of 12 students. One such student, , 17-year-old Maximiliano Rodriguez, exemplifies the program’s success. Rodriguez, a Vanguard Academy senior simultaneously earning an associate degree in Cybersecurity through STC’s Dual Credit Programs, has already amassed a diverse background in IT, including an apprenticeship with the city of Pharr.

“I knew I was good with computers,” Rodriguez said, reflecting on his early interest in the field. “But when I took that first Cybersecurity class, it opened my eyes. It’s different. It’s about protecting people.”

A Growing Cybersecurity Program

The launch of the Cybersecurity Clinic is part of a broader expansion of STC’s cybersecurity offerings. The college recently announced the development of a new Associate of Applied Science in Artificial Intelligence (AI), expected to be available in . This program is being designed with direct input from industry partners to ensure it aligns with the region’s workforce needs. According to Cybersecurity Assistant Professor and Department Chair Francisco Salinas, the AI degree is being built “from scratch based on industry needs,” aiming to equip students with the skills and certifications required for current and future jobs.

The new AI degree will offer students two tracks: a one-year certificate requiring approximately 16-30 credits, and a full associate degree requiring 60 credits. The certificate track is designed to serve as a stepping stone to the associate degree, providing a flexible pathway for students to upskill or reskill.

National Endorsement and Expanded Reach

The STC Cybersecurity Clinic has already garnered national recognition. It recently earned a national endorsement and has expanded the reach of its NSF grant, demonstrating the program’s impact and potential. The clinic’s efforts are specifically designed to protect the digital infrastructure of the Rio Grande Valley and prepare students for high-demand careers in cybersecurity.

The announcement of the clinic’s launch highlighted the critical need for a skilled cybersecurity workforce in the region. Hinojosa stated, “The Rio Grande Valley needs this workforce.” This sentiment underscores the importance of initiatives like the STC Cybersecurity Clinic in addressing the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals.

Upcoming Events and Academic Calendar

South Texas College has several events planned for the coming months. The IT Expo2026 will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about Information Technology degrees and careers through firsthand accounts from local IT professionals. Spring Break is scheduled for , and a semester break will follow from . Commencement Ceremonies are planned for and , and the college will be closed on for Memorial Day. Summer/Fall registration will be available online via JagNet following Spring Break.

The combination of practical training, industry alignment, and national recognition positions South Texas College as a key player in developing the cybersecurity workforce of the future for the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
