Rio Tinto has advanced its operations at the Kitimat aluminium smelter in Canada through the commissioning of a new alumina conveyor system. The project represents an investment of more than CAN$135 million, marking the most significant capital expenditure at the facility since its modernization approximately ten years ago.
The investment was first announced by the company on November 14, 2023. The project focuses on the replacement of the existing alumina conveyor, a piece of infrastructure that is described as essential for the smelter’s operations because alumina is an indispensable component in the production of aluminium.
Project Scope and Operational Impact
The primary objective of the replacement is to maintain the integrity and efficiency of the conveyor system. According to company statements, ensuring the seamless conveyance of alumina is paramount for the sustained success of the Kitimat plant.
The new conveyor was strategically positioned to enhance current operational efficiency. Rio Tinto stated that the location was carefully chosen to support the facility’s longevity and to allow the company to explore and capitalize on future opportunities for responsible growth.
Construction of the system began following a groundbreaking event attended by several Rio Tinto executives and local officials. Those present included Dominic Barton, Chairman at Rio Tinto. Jerome Pecresse, Chief Executive Aluminium; and Sebastian Ross, Managing Director of Atlantic Operations at Rio Tinto Aluminium Canada. Also in attendance were Simon Pascoe, General Manager of Rio Tinto BC Works, and James Steer, Director of Asset Integrity and Projects for Rio Tinto BC Works.
The groundbreaking ceremony also included local government representation from Phil Germuth, the Mayor of the District of Kitimat. The project’s execution was managed by Ola Adekola, Project Manager at Rio Tinto.
Timeline and Strategic Context
The project followed a timeline that began with the investment announcement in November 2023 and moved into the groundbreaking phase in April 2024. Full construction and the commencement of system operations were anticipated by June 2025.
This modernization effort is part of a broader strategy to ensure the reliability of the Kitimat plant’s supply chain. By replacing aging infrastructure with a state-of-the-art conveyor, the company aims to lay the groundwork for future endeavors while stabilizing current production capabilities.
The scale of the CAN$135 million investment underscores the critical nature of the alumina conveyor within the smelting process. Because the conveyor serves as a cornerstone for moving raw materials into the production line, any failure in this system would directly impact the output of the aluminium smelter.
