Yannick Sinner Wins US Open, Claims Second Major Title of the Year

Yannick Sinner lifts his first US Open trophy. He has beaten the ‘Big 4’ of men’s tennis and achieved his second major title this year.

Yannick Sinner, the 23-year-old world number one from Italy, has won the US Open tennis tournament for the first time in his life.

On September 9th, Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz (12th, USA) 3-0 (6-3, 6-4, 7-5) in the final of the US Open men’s singles held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, USA, and won the championship. The prize money is 3.6 million dollars (approximately 4.8 billion won). Sinner, who lifted his first major trophy in his life at the Australian Open last January, has won two major titles by winning this tournament.

Sinner put the controversy surrounding his doping test results to rest with his performance that day. Sinner said, “I’ve had a hard time recently, so this win means a lot. I love tennis. I’ve trained a lot to get here.” After confirming his victory, Sinner shared the joy of victory by hugging his girlfriend, tennis player Anna Kalinskaya (ranked 15th, Russia).

With this, the men’s singles championships of the four major tournaments this year were shared by Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz (21, 3rd, Spain), both born in the 2000s. Sinner won the Australian Open and the US Open, while Alcaraz won the French Open and Wimbledon. It is the first time since 2002 that none of the so-called ‘Big 4’ of men’s tennis – Roger Federer (43, Switzerland), Rafael Nadal (38, Spain), Novak Djokovic (37, Serbia), and Andy Murray (37, England) – have won a major championship.

Among the ‘Big 4’ of men’s tennis, Federer has already retired. Nadal and Murray are expected to end their active careers at the end of this year. Only Djokovic, who won the Paris Olympics last month, is still ranked second in the world. For the time being, Djokovic is expected to form a three-way system with Sinner and Alcaraz.

British BBC commentator Annabel Croft predicted, “There are people who are worried about the future of men’s tennis, but Alcaras and Sinner are there. They will produce many great matches in the future.” The head-to-head record between the two players is 5-4, with Alcaras leading Sinner.

Celebrities such as pop singer Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce (Kansas City), Elon Musk (Tesla CEO), and rapper Usher visited the stands to watch the game.
