Rising Chikungunya and Dengue Cases Detected Across France Amid Mosquito Spread

Understanding the 2026 Vector-Borne Outbreak Data

Public health authorities are closely monitoring the spread of tropical viruses across mainland France during the summer season. Data published by Santé Publique France reveals that the 15 local chikungunya cases stem from three separate episodes, with individual clusters ranging from one to eight cases each in Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In addition to locally acquired chikungunya, surveillance reports outline domestic transmission of dengue fever. Santé Publique France identified two autochthonous dengue episodes, each totaling one case, located in the Tarn and Hérault departments.

Imported Cases and Regional Spread

The current transmission season involves a high volume of travel-associated infections alongside local cases. Between May 1 and August 9, 2026, enhanced surveillance identified 105 imported cases of chikungunya, 295 imported cases of dengue, and 10 imported cases of Zika, according to Santé Publique France data. Local identifications continue to emerge in various departments. Regional reporting from Ouest-France and BFM noted a locally acquired chikungunya case in a resident of Val-de-Marne, marking the first such occurrence in the Île-de-France region for the year. Additional municipal identifications, such as a tiger mosquito confirmation in Nogent-sur-Seine reported by L’Union and the town of Nogent-sur-Marne, underscore the expanding geographical footprint of the vector.

West Nile Virus Surveillance

Alongside mosquito-borne tropical illnesses, French health authorities are tracking West Nile virus infections. By August 10, 2026, Santé Publique France recorded six autochthonous cases of West Nile virus infection in mainland France. These domestic West Nile cases are concentrated in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region—specifically within the Bouches-du-Rhône and Vaucluse departments—and in Occitanie within the Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude departments. Investigations and vector control measures remain active across all affected regions.
