Rising Online Gambling Addiction Among Thai Youth: A Growing Concern
Online Gambling Rising Among Thai Youths
Published: December 1, 2024
Recent studies reveal a concerning trend: over four million young people in Thailand are engaging in online gambling, which poses serious health risks. Experts, including Pongthep Wongwatcharapaiboon from the ThaiHealth Promotion Foundation, shared these findings during the 2024 Centre for Gambling Studies conference in Bangkok.
Dr. Pongthep pointed to the rise of online platforms, often promoted by influencers, as a significant factor. Many young Thais find it increasingly difficult to stop gambling, even after incurring losses, which is a sign of a potential addiction. He highlighted the broader impact of gambling addiction, noting that one addict can negatively affect 10 to 17 people around them.
A survey conducted by the Research Centre for Social and Business Development in late 2023 showed alarming statistics. Out of 7,131 respondents aged 15 and older, almost all knew someone who gambles. The survey indicated that 21% of children and 26% of teenagers feel social pressure to gamble. Last year, over one million youths aged 15 to 18 gambled, marking an increase of 231,000 from 2021.
Among those aged 19 to 25, approximately 3.92 million participated in gambling. Additionally, about 4.47 million senior citizens over 60 were also included in this demographic. Many gamblers reported financial problems, mental health issues, and conflicts with family and friends due to their gambling habits.
According to Nualnoi Trirat, CGS director, an estimated six million gamblers in Thailand are at high risk of developing long-term gambling problems. Thailand currently lacks sufficient mental health resources to assist these individuals.
Public sentiment is largely against gambling legalization, with more than half of Thais skeptical about proposals for football betting, casinos, and online platforms. Many are concerned that such measures could worsen gambling addiction in society.
