February 4, 2025 — &nbsp Elon, NC — Garett Risner, a North Carolina native and member of the Elon University men’s golf team, has burst onto the scene this senior spring with an impressive performance. Following a notable 7-under-par performance, Risner earned the CAA Men’s Golfer of the Week honor, showcasing his individual prowess at the Battle of Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, South Carolina.

Even in the individual sport of golf, accolades such as these reflect the support of teammates and coaches. Risner attributes a significant portion of his success to their guidance.

“I would like to thank the coaching staff and the players I’ve been around with and just giving me tips here and there,” Risner shared.

Risner’s outstanding performance was not just a personal triumph but also a pivotal moment for the entire Elon Phoenix team. The team finished tied for fourth place overall, with all members finishing within the top 50. This collective success highlights the strong camaraderie within the team.

“Each [person] brings some differences to the table and each one of them are a great person,” Risner expressed. “The tournament in John’s Island marked the start of the spring season for the Phoenix, bringing with it challenges such as rust and limited play outdoors during the winter months.”

Like many golfers across the nation, the winter months can be challenging. Risner shared the typical struggles of picking up where he left off.

“Usually, the biggest challenge for me coming into the spring season is I kind of get off to a slower start because you’re coming out of winter, and you don’t practice as much,” Risner revealed. “No matter how Risner felt, heading into round one and hitting bogey-free showed that he had nothing to worry about.”

Risner’s performance at the Battle of Briar’s Creek not only boosted his confidence but also set a high standard for the upcoming tournaments. Recently, the upcoming Donald Ross Collegiate Classic in Pinehurst, North Carolina is scheduled for March 10.

“It’s always nice to get off to a start where you shoot well. But on top of it, to not make any mistakes is a confidence boost, so that takes the pressure off you of worrying about hitting a bad shot,” Risner said describing his mind set.

Pinehurst is a renowned course known for its challenging terrain, course layout and keeping tradition alive.

“I don’t want to change much. My game plan’s been working and I’ve played Mid Pines probably 25 times, so knowing the course again is going to help,” said Risner.

Transitioning from Amateur Golf to Pro or Turning Pro officially becomes more and more popular as young golfers set their sights on turning professional. Turning Pro means competing in qualifying rounds or tournaments with the aim of securing a spot on the PGA Tour, which is the pinnacle of accomplishment in professional golf.
