As the holiday season descends upon us,bringing with it a flurry of festive cheer, one beloved tradition stands out: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s enchanting ballet,”The Nutcracker.” Tickets for this holiday classic are in high demand, selling out faster than gingerbread cookies at a Christmas market. This year, audiences are in for a special treat as young ballerina Emma lagūna takes on the coveted role of Marie, marking her debut in a leading role.
Emma’s journey to the stage has been a graceful evolution. Her passion for ballet blossomed organically, starting at a local studio in Liepāja,Latvia. She honed her skills at the prestigious Riga Ballet School, eventually gracing the grand stage of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet. Throughout her time with the company, Emma has immersed herself in various roles within “The Nutcracker,” portraying everything from a playful mouse to a delicate snowflake, even captivating audiences with her performance in the Eastern dance sequence. Now, she prepares to embrace the ultimate challenge: embodying the beloved character of Marie.
From Mouse to Marie: A Ballerina’s Journey
We caught up with Emma just as rehearsals for “The Nutcracker” were reaching their peak. Arriving straight from the Opera House, where the iconic flying sleighs were undergoing a final technical check-up, Emma exuded a palpable mix of excitement and anticipation. A fire in early September had damaged part of the production’s set, including the sleighs, but thankfully, the dedicated team had worked tirelessly to ensure everything was in perfect working order for the festive season ahead.
“Emotionally, this debut is definitely different from anything I’ve done before,” Emma shared. “This will be my first leading role. While I’ve played important roles before, like Lucy in ‘Dracula,’ it’s not quite the same. With a leading role comes a wholly different sense of obligation, and of course, some nerves. Every ballerina trains, strives to grow and achieve new goals, but when it actually happens, there’s a bit of anxiety becuase you want to present yourself in the best possible light.”
Emma’s dedication and passion are evident in every step she takes. Her debut as Marie promises to be a magical moment, not only for her but for audiences who will witness the rise of a new star on the ballet stage.
A Holiday Tradition Renewed
Emma’s story is a reminder that the magic of “The Nutcracker” lies not only in the enchanting music and dazzling choreography but also in the dedication and artistry of the dancers who bring it to life. This year, with Emma Lagūna at the helm, audiences can expect a performance that is both heartwarming and inspiring, a true testament to the enduring power of this holiday classic.
