DNV GL Hospital Accreditation Focuses on Infection Prevention

Updated June 9, 2025

Hospitals ‍constantly seek ways too ensure they deliver top-notch care. ⁢while internal reviews,‌ patient feedback, and staff input are valuable, external evaluations against⁢ national benchmarks provide crucial insights. These transparent assessments benefit both the hospital ⁤and its patients. One such⁣ accrediting body is DNV GL.

DNV GL’s roots trace back to 19th-century Norway, a major player in global shipping. Marine insurance spurred the company’s creation in 1864.Insurers needed assurance that ships were seaworthy. Det Norske Veritas developed a‍ standardized system for ship classification, evaluation, and taxation.⁢ A similar organization, Germanischer lloyd, emerged in Germany. The two groups collaborated and eventually merged in 2013, expanding ‌into energy, business, and healthcare risk mitigation.

Today, DNV GL offers various hospital accreditation services, including⁣ Certification in Infection Prevention. This certification uses standards⁤ from‍ the⁤ World Health Organization (WHO)‌ and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). DNV GL assesses‍ facilities through submitted documents, on-site inspections, and medical record audits. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved the process in ‍2008 after a four-year review.

The Infection prevention ⁣certification emphasizes⁢ 18 key measures, from written plans and staff ‌training to infrastructure and emergency preparedness. Unlike‌ some accreditation programs,‍ DNV ⁢GL doesn’t assign scores.Instead, it identifies areas for advancement over a period of⁣ up to three⁢ years, preparing the facility for the certification visit. While organizations like the ⁣Joint Commission and the ⁢Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program ‍(HFAP) ‌also offer facility accreditation,DNV GL stands out⁤ with its specific infection prevention program.

What’s next

Hospitals seeking a thorough approach to accreditation, particularly in infection control, may find DNV GL’s program a valuable option for improving patient‍ outcomes and ensuring a‍ safe ⁢environment.
