Rita McPhillips, Beloved Monaghan Woman, Dies Peacefully at Home

Monaghan Town, Monaghan, Ireland – February 14, 2026 – Rita McPhillips (née Hughes), a cherished member of the Monaghan community, passed away peacefully at her home in Rakeeragh on Saturday, surrounded by her family. She was a woman known for her loving nature, kindness and unwavering faith.

Born and formerly of Legacurry, Rita’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and remembrance from friends, neighbors, and family. She is predeceased by her husband, Patrick, her sister Kathleen, and her brother Jim.

Rita is survived by her son, Niall (and his wife Annmarie), and her daughters, Eileen (Frank), Gillian (Vincent), Una (Ultan), and Denise (Cathal). She leaves behind a legacy of love through her cherished grandchildren – Mark, Jamie, Sherell, Darrin, Patrick, Orla, Molly, Aaron, Tom, and Ryan – as well as her great-grandchildren, Jack, Conor, and Katie.

Her family expressed their deep gratitude for the exceptional care she received, acknowledging her sister Joan McQuaid, sister-in-law Rose McMullen, Mary Brennan, and the many nieces and nephews who were a part of her life. Special thanks were also extended to her wonderful neighbors, her dedicated carers, the Alzheimer’s Society, Cavan/Monaghan Palliative Care, and Bernie Boyle for their outstanding support.

The family shared a simple, heartfelt message: “May Rita’s gentle soul Rest in Peace.”

Rita’s remains reposed at her home in Rakeeragh (H18E654) on Sunday, February 15th, from 2pm to 8pm, and again on Monday, February 16th, from 2pm to 8pm, allowing friends and community members to pay their respects.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday morning, February 17th, at 11am at St. Macartan’s Cathedral in Monaghan. Following the mass, Rita will be laid to rest in Latlurcan cemetery.

For those unable to attend in person, Rita’s Funeral Mass will be streamed live at https://mcn.live/Camera/st-macartans-cathedral-monaghan, allowing loved ones from afar to participate in the service.

The passing of Rita McPhillips marks a significant loss for the Monaghan community. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a kind and gentle soul who touched the lives of many.
