Rivalry Renewed: Nishikori Set to Clash with Shan in Highly-Anticipated Tennis Showdown
Kei Nishikori Faces Shang Junchen in Chengdu Open First Round
World No. 201 Kei Nishikori, participating as a wild card, will face 67th-ranked Shang Junchen (China) in the first round of the Chengdu Open men’s tennis tournament (Chengdu, China, hard, ATP250).
The match is scheduled for the second match on the center court, with the first match starting at 14:00 Japan time on the 19th (13:00 local time on the 19th).
Nishikori, 34, formerly ranked No. 4 in the world, has been competing in consecutive Italian Challenger tournaments from last month to this month, reaching the quarterfinals in both.
Most recently, he participated as a member of the Japanese national team in the Davis Cup World Group 1 match between Japan and Colombia (Japan/Tokyo, Ariake Coliseum, hard) held on the 14th and 15th, where he won the second singles match and contributed to Japan’s victory.
This will be the second time Nishikori has met Shang, with their first match being in the second round at the Atlanta Open (USA/Atlanta, hard, ATP250) last July, where Nishikori won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
The winner of this match will face either eighth seed R. Safiullin or world No. 79 F. Fognini (Italy) in the second round.
